Home Battery Storage Compared

A home battery stores cheap off-peak or solar electricity for use later. The right one depends on how much energy you use in the evening, whether you already have solar panels, and which inverter you have. Specs below are taken from each manufacturer’s datasheet.

How to choose

Size it to your evening use

Look at how many kWh you use between late afternoon and bedtime. A battery much bigger than that, without solar or a time-of-use tariff, may never fill or empty fully.

Usable vs nominal capacity

Compare usable capacity, not nominal. A 10 kWh battery with 90% depth of discharge gives about 9 kWh to use.

Power matters for big appliances

Continuous power (kW) decides how many appliances the battery can run at once. An electric shower or oven can draw 7–10 kW.

AC- or DC-coupled?

AC-coupled batteries can be added to almost any existing solar system. DC-coupled batteries pair with a specific hybrid inverter, which is usually best for new solar-plus-battery installs.

Read the warranty conditions

Warranties usually guarantee a percentage of capacity after a number of years or a throughput limit, whichever comes first — and some require the battery to stay online.

Use an MCS-certified installer

Get at least three quotes from MCS-certified installers. Home batteries fitted in Great Britain currently qualify for 0% VAT.

Frequently asked questions

How big a home battery do I need?

Most UK homes are well served by 5–14 kWh of usable storage. Check your smart meter data for how much you use in the evening and overnight, and size the battery to cover that rather than your whole day.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Yes. An AC-coupled battery (such as the GivEnergy All in One, Tesla Powerwall 3 in AC mode or Enphase IQ Battery 5P) can usually be added to an existing system. DC-coupled batteries need a compatible hybrid inverter.

Is a home battery worth it without solar panels?

It can be if you are on a time-of-use tariff: the battery charges on cheap overnight rates and powers your home during expensive peak hours. The saving depends on the gap between your off-peak and peak prices.

Will a battery keep my power on in a power cut?

Only if the system includes backup hardware (such as a gateway or EPS output) and is installed for backup. Many batteries do not provide backup by default — ask your installer.
