How to Switch Energy Suppliers in the UK

Everything you need to know, what to have ready, and how the switch process works under Ofgem rules.

2. The 4-Step Switching Process

01

Compare Deals

Use our Tariff Calculator to compare unit rates, standing charges, green credentials, and customer scores across UK suppliers.

02

Apply Online

Submit your details. Your new supplier handles the entire transfer with your old provider. You don't need to call anyone to cancel.

03

14-Day Cooling Off

Under Ofgem regulations, you have a 14-day statutory cooling-off window. You can change your mind at any point with zero exit fees.

04

Switch Complete (~5 Days)

Provide an opening meter reading. Your old supplier sends a final bill and refunds any positive credit balance to your bank.

3. Important Facts: Myths vs. Reality

Myth: "My gas or electricity supply will be interrupted"

Fact: There is absolutely zero disruption to your supply. The physical pipes, cables, and meters remain identical—only the billing company changes.

Myth: "I have to contact my old supplier to cancel"

Fact: Never contact your old supplier to cancel! Your new provider contacts them directly to schedule the handoff seamlessly.

Myth: "I will lose any credit built up on my account"

Fact: Under the Energy Switch Guarantee, your previous supplier must automatically refund any outstanding credit balance within 14 working days of your final bill.

Myth: "I will always have to pay exit fees"

Fact: Under Ofgem rules, if you are within the last 49 days of your fixed-term contract, suppliers are legally forbidden from charging exit fees.
